I recently read Comic Book Artist #22, the Gold Key Tribute issue.

As a kid, I never gave Gold Key comics a try ... I suppose I thought I was "too cool" for Gold Key!

After reading CBA, I feel like I might have missed out on some pretty neat books!

Any chance of anybody reprinting all those great looking books like:

Turok, Son of Stone
Magnus, Robot Fighter
Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom
M.A.R.S. Patrol
Space Family Robinson

Heck! It looks like there were probably even more! (Yes ... I'm aware of the Valiant & Acclaim relaunches; I want to see the originals!)

These wouldn't have to be hardcovers ... I'd settle for paperbacks.

Am I the only one who looked at Gold Key differently after the CBA #22 article?

Valiant did reprint some of the Gold Key material. Track down if you can their "Original Magnus", "Original Solar", and "Original Turok" comics along with "Vintage Magnus". Those are the only Gold Key reprints I'm aware of. Or you could try to track down the originals as the aren't overly expensive unless you want them in Mint condition (earliest issues being the exception, of course.)

Original Magnus - 1 issue, published in 1995
Original Doctor Solar - 1 issue, published in 1995
Original Turok - 2 issues, published in 1995
Vintage Magnus - 4 issues, published in 1992

Hope this helps
Steve

My memory of the details of the Valiant GK reprints is hazy, but I seem to recall that they were heavily edited.

That's right. I don't have Vintage Magnus but all of the "Original" issues were recolored and panal layouts were changed for a more "modern" feel.

Also Valient reprinted some Captain Joyner (SP?) stories in a two issue series.

Captain Johner. Yes, the reprints were all recolored in the distinctive (some, not me, might say "crappy") early Valiant style and there were significant edits.

I'd be most in favor of a reprinting of the original Dr. Solar, followed by Magnus. Maybe one volume of Space Family Robinson.

Magnus, Turok, Total War/MARS Patrol, and Dr.Solar, in that order, for me.
And make it snappy.
No mayo.

I think I'd go for Magnus first, then Dr. Solar.

I read Comic Book Artist #22, front to back. it was a great issue. I just hope the magazine continues to be good under the new publisher.

Anyway, there was a two-page spread showing many or all of the Turok covers. I have a few issues in my collection just as a sample of what the series was like. The coer reproductions in CBA pretty much tell it all:

The first cover shows Turok fighting a dinosaur, the second shows Turok fighting a dinosaur, the next shows Turok fighting a dinosaur, and the next shows Turok fighting a dinosaur, the next shows Turok fighting a dinosaur, the next shows Turok fighting a dinosaur, the next shows Turok fighting a dinosaur, the next shows Turok fighting a dinosaur, and so on until the blasted book was cancelled after several years.

Yeah, I spent most of my youth reading about Superman throwing Luthor into prison every month, but somehow it didn't seem aas monotonous as Turok.

I forgot to add, however, that Turok the Turok covers were beautifully painted.

Sigh! That's what I get for typing too fast to add a post before someone else gets on. Of course, I meant:

Maybe they should have occasionally had a cover with Turok fighting a gorilla.

First off, Turok would be first in line, far outdistancing Magnus or Doctor Solar on my wish list. In fact, after Turok I'd go with the Tarzan series, then Space Family Robinson.

As for the Turok covers and stories, I didn't find them monotonous at all. And the covers not only were beautiful, but varied alot, IMHO.

Gary "how can you go wrong with Indians and dinosaurs?" O.

I wasn't considering Tarzan, since that's a different rights situation, but yeah, I'd go for a complete reprinting of all the Tarzan comic book material (Jesse Marsh too), including separate volumes of Brothers of the Spear. Can't go wrong with Russ Manning.

I will NEVER forget the following Gold Key comic someone gave me:
It had a hooded executioner with a big axe, stripped down to some tight black leather pants, with the hairiest chest I've ever seen in comics.

And it was drawn by Neal Adams.

No wonder I'm gay...

The Gold key Star Trek comics were collected and reprinted as 'Star Trek Logs' but that was in the 1980's. You see them up for sale on eBay sometimes.

Quick points about this (being a Turok fan myself!) --
first, Turok wasn't cancelled after several years unless you count several as 28 years . Turok started in 1954 and was finally laid to rest in 1982 after 130 issues and one giant annual. But that's just the nitpicker in me. I know what you meant.

Regarding the fighting a dinosaur litany -- one of my friends has a complete run of Turok and really loves the character. So being a good friend he let me borrow the compelte run because I hadn't read very many of them and wanted to see what I was missing.

I read quite a few of them in one sitting (shades of Flaming Carrot or Super-Snipe) and came to the conclusion that while the covers depicted Turok fighting a dinosaur every issue, the plots were Andar suggests something stupid, Turok tells him not to do his stupid suggestion because it was dangerous, Andar does it anyway and Turok has to rescue him. End of story for the month.

The manager of my local comic shop and I were joking with the friend that there were basically only three plots to every Turok comic:
1) Andar does something stupid and Turok has to rescue him; or
2) Turok has to rescue Andar because he did something stupid; or finally
3) Andar gets rescued by Turok after he does something stupid.

The moral of this story was we planted such a strong suggestion about the stories that he can't read a single issue without figuring out which of the three plots applied to that issue.

Gorgo was published by Charlton and had some great Steve Ditko art in it. It's on my "eventually I get around to buying it" list.

If I were reprinting the Gold Key material, my order would be
1. Turok
2. Magnus
3. Space Family Robinson
4. Doctor Solar
5. Mighty Samson

Or better yet a scrappy blonde kid in tattered blue pants fighting a gorilla...wearing a hat.

Actually, I'd enjoy these too. The art style and stories were quite different than the DC or Marvels.

Because they had non-contemporary settings, they are kind of timeless. Turok's realm is just as savage, Magnus' North Am is just as futuristic today as back in 1970's.

I'm not sure how many issues of Mighty Samson there were - I only ever saw one...

He must not be around the past couple of days--otherwise he certainly would have asked for Crime Does Not Pay on the non-DC Archives thread.

Wasn't Gold Key the publisher of the 2 or 3 Space Ghost (the "original" version, not the talk show host) appearances, or other Hanna-Barbera "super-heroes" such as Mighty Mightor,Birdman, Galaxy Trio, Frankenstien Jr., Samson, etc.? As a kid, I always thought that was a whole comics group going unpublished. What a waste of potential. I did pick up Super TV Heroes off the stands back then but can't remember if it was Gold Key. Anyway, probably for pure nostalgia, I'd like to see all that stuff collected in one spot. The prices were high on Space Ghost, whenever I used to see it at conventions, even in "good" or worse condition.
